The storm has come. The homosexuals, once an ostracized social minority, have taken over the world. They understood the dangers of an overpopulated planet, usurped government power, and created a culture of perfectly engineered families. But Grace Jarvis and Dex Wheelock are heterosexuals—part of the government’s highly controlled backup plan for reproduction—and they have a problem

Grace is pregnant. Dex is the father. It is a crime that has only one consequence banishment to the Antarctic Sanctuary, an isolated biological reserve where reproductive criminals are allowed to exist in peace, without disrupting the rest of civilization. Yet there are rumors that genocide has already begun and that the homosexuals are finally setting natural breeders on a path to extinction. This leaves Grace and Dex with only two choices to succumb to the tyrannical regime, or run. They choose to run.

Matthew J. Beier’s debut novel tells the intimate story of two people bound by the force of life itself as they set out to protect their unborn child and find value for themselves in a world that has rendered them worthless. This rainbow-tinted reflection of our own society—part political satire and part dystopian thriller—is a novel you won’t want to miss.

As the author says in the afterword he wasn't sure when he started writing the book if it would be a satire, parody or vision of a dystopian future and unfortunately it showed. While I thought the idea of flipping the world view so now it's heterosexuality that is unacceptable to the homosexual majority was a clever one, the author's caricatures of over the top homosexuality left me cold. I think this book would have been much better if the at hour had found a consistent tone without the attempt at "humor".

The Breeders edition by Matthew J Beier Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I really liked this book! What a world the author has created. Although extreme, it is the opposite of how the world is today and I loved it. Goes to show what unchecked bigotry could possibly create! I liked the characters and the ending was unexpected and felt like a punch in the gut! BUT, he did a good job at creating that feeling so I appreciate it! Looking forward to his next book!
Chapter one sucked me in. The writing is smooth. The story intriguing. The alternative viewpoint makes you wonder. I can feel her fear, her confusion. Though it was so dramatically intense and laden with possibilities that I opted not to take it to the couch with me for my even unwind - because I was relatively sure it would not be a relaxing read.

I'm struggling to understand why I'm struggling to progress through the first few chapters of this book. My trepidation stems from reading about a parent that has prejudices so strong they undermine their love for their child. That was never love, but simply love for the idea of a child.

This dystopian novel turns social norms on their head for an interpretation of dictatorship that simply pretends at democracy as the leaders in power push through their ideals and destroy all dissenters.

Well written with a juggling point of view, each chapter switches from Him to Her with occasional flashbacks to add backstory.

I had trouble reading it consistently only because of the premonition of horrible things. If character development had been a little bit stronger, I suspect I would not have been able to put it down.

Be prepared to be appalled and horrified while slightly hopeful. Highly recommend reading with an OPEN MINDED reading group as there are a TON of talking points relating to politics, sexuality, morality, and family.

If you love dystopians and have an open mind, this is for you.
It was a brilliantly and wonderfully written novel. It was full of detail, suspense, sorrow, hope, happiness, love, life, and death. A reflection of our time today (what us LGBT human beings go through today; persecution, ridicule, discrimination, oppression and even murder) and what may very well be a realistic future, if ever. This really good novel was so detailed and realistic that it grasped me into the book and made me feel as if I was right there along side Grace Jarvis and Dex Wheelock. It's full of edge-of-your-seat suspense that grasps you by the neck in a strong hold. It's a brilliantly and wonderfully written literary art. I am also glad the author did an afterword to explain why he written the novel the way he did. Most of the stuff was obvious to me-I'm gay-but he gave a better explanation to heterosexuals. A very real depiction of how society views and treats us gays and lesbians; only the table is turned onto heterosexuals. I believe every homophobic heterosexual should read this great novel because it will put them into our shoes and give them a whole new perspective. It will make them realize that they have it made in this world and what they are doing to us is wrong and will, hopefully, change many many hearts and souls for the better. Like another said, "It will leave you with mental images that will linger in your sub-conscience for days". Not only that, the truth and morals behind it will linger inside those who read this novel for a lifetime, as it will for me. Hell, I live it this very moment in life, all for simply being born different. I loved this novel, it is a work of literary art that deserves it's utmost recognition and distribution. I highly recommend this brilliant novel and will tell everyone I know to read it.
The premise was promising, but no believable follow through. Do not recommend unless you can pick it up as a freebie.
It was an okay read. Worst ending ever. Some grammatical issues I had to skip over because I couldn't even figure out what it was trying to say. I wish I could get that time back but I can't.
The concept is intriguing what might a world of the future be like if the the tables were turned and heterosexuals were the oppressed minority? But the author goes way beyond a simple concept and has created an interesting and exciting story on many levels. It's told from the alternating point of view of a man and a woman who unexpectedly conceive a child together and are therefore on the run for their lives from an oppressive government and police force.

Story elements include well-developed characters that you will care about, suspenseful escape and chase sequences, a well-organized underground opposition movement, villans that will make your skin crawl, plenty of plot twists, romance, sex, humor and a vividly described future world. There's nothing better than a book you can't put down, can't wait to get back to when you do, and can't stop thinking about when you finish. For me, that's what The Breeders is. Highly recommended!
I wasn't expecting much from this book, but it drew me in. The premise of the story is almost Swiftian satire, but the story, crafted almost like a play, is written over other stories; a palimpsest of things that could have been. I cared about all of the characters, they were that well-created. I always consider that a sign of a good story.
